Over 250 guests and former
students of Rural Special School gathered on Saturday, June 2nd
at the gymnasium to celebrate the school’s 60th
anniversary. School began in November 1946 when Old Main was
completed. Grades 1-10 attended the first year with 11th
grade added the following year. The first senior class graduated in
1949.
A reception was held for
1949-1969 graduates at 2pm. Former students who traveled the farthest
included Bernard Schiefer of Mission, TX; Vernice Ramsey of Old
Hickory, TN; Roland Miller of Mounds, OK; Phyllis Schiefer Flanigan of
Missouri; Marcille Perry Hinesley and Bernis Hinesley of Raytown, MO.
A reception for 1970-1989
graduates was held at 4pm. Students who traveled the farthest
included Barry Higgins of Colorado Springs, CO; Paul Harris of
Nashville, TN; Deanna Sebert Boso of Kansas. Debbie Morris Hipp and
Cindy Daniel Ellis received reunion T-shirts as their prize for
singing the Alma Mater. Also in attendance were former teachers and
staff of this group: Maggie Stewart, Hoover and Olene Gilbert, Rodney
and Angalee Rushing, Rachelle Stewart, Roger Hipp, and Jody Sebert.
A reception for 1990-2007
graduates was held at 6pm. Those who traveled the farthest included
Cassie Sutter of Virginia; Lynn Huddler of Wyoming; David Sterlin of
Brownsville, TX; Stephanie Huddler Camp of Texas; Kenny Campbell of
Missouri. Class of 1995 demonstrated the greatest Rebel spirit by
having the most graduates in attendance at the reunion. Lacey Roper
Turner and Abby Hipp received T-shirts for singing the Alma Mater.
Also present were Rodney and Angalee Rushing, Susan Bane, Roger Hipp,
Rachelle Stewart, Jody Sebert and Pam Thomas, former teachers and
staff of this group of students.
The 60 Year Reunion
was sponsored by Rural Special PTO which funded the postage for
mailing about 800 invitations to former students. Volunteers Angalee
Rushing, Ramona Rorie, Cindy Ellis, Pat Caston, and Cindy Osburn took
on a daunting task of gathering mailing addresses of graduates from
their respective decade.
